Canadians Sharing Locally and Globally is working directly with The Sri Narayani Siddar Peedam Charitable Trust with an existing program called “Green Sakthi”. Green Sakthi is involved in planting seeds, raising and transplanting shrubs and saplings, for the purpose of reforestation of the area around Thirumalaikodi, Tamil Nadu, India which had once been badly deforested. The program is establishing many native plants and trees on the once barren hills. The Green Sakthi program is also involved in Thirumalaikodi in raising public environmental awareness, creating stewardship, and working with various public and private agencies to achieve the goal of reforestation. Canadians Sharing Locally and Globally is supporting Green Sakthi by purchasing and providing at least 3500 seeds, pots, potting materials, soil and fertilizer for the purpose of planting seeds, raising saplings and shrubs which will be donated to charitable or government organizations involved in reforestation. The anticipated cost of each sapling or shrub from seed planting to transplanting stage is C$1.00. Once the saplings and shrubs are large enough to be transplanted, Green Sakthi will provide the saplings and shrubs free to charitable or government organizations for the purpose of reforestation. Canadians Sharing Locally and Globally will select the varieties of trees and shrubs to be grown in and around Thirumalaikodi on the basis of recommendations from Green Sakthi and other knowledgeable groups and individuals. Canadians Sharing Locally and Globally will make site visits at least twice per year in January and August and report on the growth of the saplings and shrubs provided and, at the time of transplanting or following transplanting, of their eventual distribution and location. The Sri Narayani Siddar Peedam Charitable Trust will govern the administration of this program in accordance with Canadian requirements.

What are the program’s goals this year?
Provide 3500 seeds, saplings or shrubs for the reforestation programs. Program total CAD$3500.

Canadians Sharing Locally and Globally is working with The Sri Narayani Siddar Peedam Charitable Trust which operates The Exnora Zero Waste Management Project – Sri Narayani Peedam, Vellore, as intermediary, to assist in the preservation of the environment in and around Thirumalaikodi, Tamil Nadu State, Southern India by recycling waste materials into useable materials. This project employs people that manually separate waste into various recyclable categories such as plastics, metals, glass, and compostable organic materials. The recycled materials are then sold to offset the costs of the recycling program or used directly to reduce costs. The Exnora Zero Waste Management Project – Sri Narayani Peedam, Vellore – employs women and men from rural and under-served communities and trains them with job skills. Canadians Sharing Locally and Globally is contributing to the project by providing workers in the program with the equipment and clothing required to maintain their health and safety as these men and women are trained to work to provide sustainable incomes for their families. Examples of equipment and clothing provided by Canadians Sharing Locally and Globally include hairnets, facemasks, gloves, and other protective equipment. Volunteers from Canadians Sharing Locally and Globally will view and report on the use and benefits of the facemasks, hairnets, gloves, and protective equipment provided at least twice a year in January and August. Canadians Sharing Locally and Globally will observe improvements which result from CSLG’s contribution to this project and will further discuss program capacity and needs on an ongoing basis.
